Character Frequency Counter

Analyze the frequency of each character in your text. View counts, percentages, and distribution.

How it works

This tool scans your text and counts every occurrence of each character, then presents the results as a sortable table with visual frequency bars.

  • Case insensitive mode: merges uppercase and lowercase letters into a single entry so that "A" and "a" are counted together.
  • Sorting: click any column header to sort by character, count, or percentage in ascending or descending order.
  • Filters: narrow the table to show only letters, digits, whitespace, or punctuation characters.
  • Frequency bars: the bar width is proportional to the character's count relative to the most frequent character, giving a quick visual overview of the distribution.

Character frequency analysis is used in cryptography, linguistics, data compression, and natural language processing. For example, in English the most common letters are E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, and R.
